Users are now being charged by Elon Musk for access to TweetDeck

The popular tool for power users, TweetDeck, has undergone significant changes. It is no longer available for free, with users being redirected to a sales page for X Premium, previously known as Twitter Blue.

Elon Musk, owner of X, hinted at this change in July, promising an updated version of TweetDeck. The new features include support for longer posts, Twitter Spaces, polls, and extended video capabilities.

However, users were surprised to find that TweetDeck was no longer accessible and were redirected to sign up for X Premium, which offers benefits such as a blue checkmark for a monthly fee of $8.

Kevin Grout, a marketer in British Columbia, expressed his disappointment, stating that TweetDeck was an essential communication tool for him for the past 15 years. He questioned the need for these changes and their impact on users.

TweetDeck was highly valued for its ability to monitor multiple feeds, create real-time news feeds, and manage multiple accounts. Some of this functionality has been incorporated into X’s website, but it lacks the same real-time capabilities of TweetDeck.

Andrew Dyer, a reporter, relies on TweetDeck for his daily work, as it allows him to monitor various topics and niche lists. He describes it as an invaluable tool providing real-time situational awareness.

However, Dyer expressed reluctance to pay for X Premium and believes that these changes are intended to drive journalists away from the platform.

Social media consultant and analyst Matt Navarra warned that the removal of TweetDeck is a setback for social media managers, journalists, and power users who heavily rely on the tool.

These recent changes reflect Elon Musk’s efforts to generate revenue through subscriptions rather than advertising. Since acquiring Twitter, Musk has implemented several controversial changes that have drawn criticism from civil rights groups and advertisers.

Judd Legum, an independent journalist, expressed disappointment in Musk’s approach, stating that he keeps removing features instead of adding value to the service. Legum acknowledges the lack of alternatives to TweetDeck and is considering paying for X Premium.
