Folarin Balogun, the New York-born striker who excelled on loan at Reims from Arsenal, has made his debut for the United States men’s national team. This comes just weeks after he chose to represent the USA over England and Nigeria.
Despite being eligible to play for three different countries, Balogun committed to the Stars and Stripes on May 16. He was named in B.J. Callaghan’s squad for the CONCACAF Nations League and got the chance to play against Mexico on Thursday night.
After scoring 20 goals in Ligue 1 this season, the 21-year-old is expected to be a strong contender for the starting No. 9 position in the team.
Balogun previously represented England at the U-17, U-18, U-20, and U-21 levels, as well as the USA at the U-18 level. However, after being overlooked by England, he decided to switch allegiance to his country of birth.
‘My decision to represent the United States was a family decision,’ he said in an official statement.
