US Seeks to Limit Diplomatic Options in Niger Following Military Takeover

The United States intends to maintain its diplomatic and military presence in Niger, despite European countries withdrawing following a recent attempted coup against the democratically elected president. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby stated that the U.S. is focused on diplomatic efforts to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum and is observing the support for General Abdourahmane Tchiani’s power grab. The U.S. has refrained from labeling the overthrow as a “coup” and continues to provide military assistance to Niger, a country that hosts American troops and drone bases. Niger is strategically significant for U.S. intelligence operations in the Sahel and eastern Africa, and the American military advices and trains Nigerian forces. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has emphasized that U.S. assistance to Niger depends on the preservation of democratic governance and constitutional order. While the Biden administration is monitoring the situation closely, they have not made a decision on U.S. assistance and have no immediate plans to evacuate American citizens. France and Spain are reportedly evacuating their citizens due to the closure of borders imposed by Niger’s military. White House dismisses Russia’s involvement in the coup, despite protests in support of the military and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

Furthermore, the White House denies any connection between Russia and Niger, stating that there is no evidence indicating Russian involvement. Putin has enhanced his presence in Africa as part of his global campaign against the U.S. and the West amid the conflict in Ukraine. Kirby argues that any claims of Russian influence in Niger are baseless and that Russia typically takes credit for unrest in the region. The U.S. is not greatly concerned about a significant Russian impact in Niger.
