During a joint appearance with Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi passionately criticized the U.S. sanctions on Tuesday.
Raisi embarked on his first trip to Latin America to strengthen ties with important allies in the region. Before arriving in Nicaragua on Tuesday, he visited Venezuela and is scheduled to make a stop in Cuba next.
Raisi stated during a speech alongside Ortega, “The United States attempted to debilitate our nation with threats and sanctions, but it has been unsuccessful.”
The United States has imposed extensive sanctions on Iran, resulting in significant economic damage. These sanctions primarily target Iran’s alleged human rights violations, suppression of protestors and free speech, and its alliance with Russia in the Ukrainian conflict.
According to The Associated Press, the United States has accused Iran of providing Russia with drones and resources to establish a drone manufacturing facility, aiming to ensure a continuous supply of weapons for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Raisi’s visit takes place amid escalating tensions with the United States.
Nicaragua and Venezuela are also facing U.S. sanctions.
