The protest took place in the second set of the women’s semifinal match between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova.

While four protesters were taken into custody, the reasons for the lack of charges against two of them remain unclear. However, the two individuals who were not charged have reportedly been issued banning notices from the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Jake Gardner, the U.S. Open tournament referee, entered the court during the Gauff-Muchova match as security personnel removed the protesters from the stands.

Both Gauff and Muchova returned to the locker room while officials handled the situation.

For the men’s semifinal matches, there was an increased presence of law enforcement personnel, including undercover officers, at the U.S. Open on Friday.
