US Open: Aaron Rodgers Commends Novak Djokovic for Anti-Vaccination Position

In an Instagram story on Sunday night, Aaron Rodgers expressed admiration for Novak Djokovic beyond his tennis skills. The New York Jets quarterback, who was attending the U.S. Open in Queens, shared his excitement about fulfilling a bucket list item by watching Djokovic play live. In addition, Rodgers seemed to show support for Djokovic’s choice to remain unvaccinated against COVID-19. He included the goat emoji and the hashtag “novaxdjokovic” in his post. Alongside the photo, Rodgers drew a red line over the Moderna logo, one of the pharmaceutical companies producing COVID vaccines. Throughout the pandemic, Rodgers has been skeptical of the vaccine and opted not to receive it. However, his vaccination status became a point of controversy when he misinformed the public and later tested positive for COVID in November 2021.

Last year, Djokovic was unable to participate in the U.S. Open due to his unvaccinated status, which prevented his entry into the United States. However, in May, the U.S. government lifted the vaccination requirement for international travelers entering the country. Djokovic, known for his staunch opposition to vaccination, once stated that he would rather miss grand slams than take the COVID shot in order to continue competing. This year, he is back at the U.S. Open, expressing no regrets about his absence in the previous two years. Djokovic emphasized his excitement to be back on American soil and his previous successes in American tournaments.

In Sunday night’s match, Djokovic defeated Borna Gojo with a score of 6-2, 7-5, 6-4, advancing to the quarterfinals. On Tuesday, he will face American player Taylor Fritz, which will mark Djokovic’s 13th quarterfinal appearance in Queens. Notably, Djokovic has a perfect 7-0 record against Fritz.
