US House Nears Vote on Biden Impeachment Inquiry, Speaker Announces

The United States House Speaker, Mike Johnson, suggested over the weekend that Republicans are edging closer to a formal vote to initiate an impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden.

During an appearance on Fox and Friends Weekend, Johnson stated, “I think it’s something we have to do at this juncture.”

For months, Republicans have diligently investigated the business dealings of Biden and his son Hunter in hopes of finding evidence to support impeachment. As of now, the full House has not voted to approve an impeachment inquiry, with some Republicans expressing doubt about the evidence available to justify such a move.

The White House has rejected Republican efforts to obtain information, citing a 2020 opinion from the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel, which emphasizes the need for a full House vote before the production of documents or interviews can be compelled by a House committee.

Johnson, joined by GOP conference chair Elise Stefanik, expressed confidence in having enough votes to proceed with an inquiry and underscored the importance of obtaining information from the White House.

“Elise and I both served on the impeachment defense team of Donald Trump twice when the Democrats used it for brazen, partisan political purposes. We decried that use of it. This is very different. Remember, we are the rule-of-law team. We have to do it very methodically,” Johnson explained.

The Republican investigation has yielded several misleading claims but nothing substantial. During a September hearing, experts called by Republicans expressed a lack of evidence to justify impeachment.

Hunter Biden has also offered to publicly testify before the committees investigating his business dealings.
