Officers in England shared news on Wednesday that the suspect arrested on manslaughter charges in connection with the death of hockey player Adam Johnson has been released on bail.

According to a release from South Yorkshire Police Department, the man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter has been released on police bail. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as available.

“Our investigation continues and we will provide further updates as and when we can,” the department stated.

Authorities announced that a man was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of manslaughter in Johnson’s death. Johnson, 29, died from a skate blade cutting his neck during a game against the Sheffield Steelers last month.

Becs Horsfall, Detective Chief Superintendent, stated:

“Our investigation continues and we will provide further updates as and when we can. Adam’s death has sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world.”

To prevent similar incidents in the future, coroner Tanyka Rawden has requested mandatory use of neck guards in ice hockey. The English Ice Hockey Association has already mandated the use of neck guards for all players from the start of 2024.

Matt Petgrave, the player involved in the accident, has faced a barrage of racist abuse online following the incident.
