Update: Court Appearance of Suspect Charged in Tupac Shakur’s Fatal Shooting in Las Vegas – Orange County Register

LAS VEGAS — In a surprising turn of events, Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a self-proclaimed gangster believed to be behind the murder of Tupac Shakur in 1996, made his first appearance before a Nevada judge on Wednesday. The 60-year-old Davis was apprehended last week during an early morning walk near his home in suburban Henderson. Shortly after, a grand jury indictment was unsealed in Clark County District Court, charging him with murder. The grand jurors also decided to add sentencing enhancements for the alleged use of a deadly weapon and gang activity. Conviction on these charges could mean additional decades to Davis’ sentence. When asked for an interview from jail, Davis declined, and his longtime personal attorney, Edi Faal, stated that he had no comment at this time.

Meanwhile, Davis’ arrest has reignited interest in one of hip-hop’s most enduring mysteries. Authorities believe that Shakur’s murder was a result of a rivalry between East Coast Bloods gang members affiliated with rap music mogul Marion “Suge” Knight, and the West Coast Crips, led by Davis in Compton, California. The tension between the factions escalated on the night of September 7, 1996, during a brawl between Shakur and Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, at the MGM Grand hotel-casino in Las Vegas. Following the altercation, Knight and Shakur were driving when a white Cadillac pulled up next to them at a red light on the Las Vegas Strip. Gunfire erupted from the Cadillac, hitting Shakur multiple times and resulting in his death a week later at the age of 25. Davis has admitted to being in the front passenger seat of the Cadillac and providing his nephew with a handgun, which he claims was used in the shooting. Davis is the only survivor of the four individuals in the Cadillac that night. Anderson passed away in 1998, while the other two passengers, DeAndre “Big Dre” or “Freaky” Smith and Terrence “Bubble Up” Brown, died in 2004 and 2015, respectively.

The arrest comes after years of speculation and public interest in the unsolved murder, and it is hoped that Davis’ trial will finally shed light on the circumstances surrounding Shakur’s death. The investigation into the murder has been heavily criticized, with many accusing law enforcement of being reluctant to pursue the case. However, Sheriff Kevin McMahill has refuted these claims, stating that the investigation has always been a priority for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, Tupac’s sister, issued a statement calling the arrest a “pivotal moment” but stopped short of praising the authorities for their efforts, stating that the past 27 years of silence have spoken loudly in their community.
