Tips for Traveling during Train Strikes

Expect significant disruptions on strike days as indicated by National Rail. Services may start later on the day after the strikes. Here are some recommendations for passengers:

  • Use the Journey Planner provided by National Rail. Make sure to check it close to each strike date.
  • Stay informed with the Live Trains page for real-time updates on arrivals and departures.
  • Plan ahead and check your entire journey, especially if you’re traveling on the first and last trains of strike days.

Ticket Office Closures at Train Stations

According to the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), nearly all railway station ticket offices will be closed. Staff will be relocated to station platforms and concourses. They will only remain open at the busiest stations. Passengers will be notified of potential closures through posters displayed at the stations. The final decision on which offices will be shut down will be made by the Government after a consultation. The closure process is expected to take three years.

Reasons for Aslef Strikes

Members of Aslef are taking industrial action to demand a pay rise. The union has criticized the government for failing to meet with its negotiating team, including general secretary Mick Whelan, assistant general secretary Simon Weller, and executive committee president Dave Calfe. The last meeting between the union’s representatives and the employers, the Rail Delivery Group, took place in April under the agreed post-pandemic framework of the Rail Industry Recovery Group.

In frustration, Mr. Whelan stated, “Do you remember Where’s Wally? Well, what we want to know is where’s Harper? We last saw the Secretary of State for Transport in December. We last saw Huw Merriman, the Rail Minister, in January. And we last saw the train companies in April. Since then, nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not a letter, not an email, not a text message, not a phone call, not a WhatsApp. Not a word!”
