Unveiling Yamaha’s Futuristic and Captivating Motoroid 2: A Mind-Bending, Self-Balancing Wonder

Yamaha has recently introduced the revamped version of its peculiar concept bike, the Motoroid 2. This futuristic motorcycle features a twisting swingarm, AI facial recognition technology, and self-balancing capabilities. Yamaha’s intention behind the Motoroid 2 is to explore the possibilities of future human-machine interfaces, and from the looks of it, the results are quite bizarre. So, what exactly is this contraption? Well, let’s start with the basics – it’s an electric motorcycle with a hub-driven rear wheel. However, the uniqueness lies in the fact that the hub is mounted on a swingarm that can be swiveled back and forth, separately from the rest of the bike. The translucent white appearance of the Motoroid 2 gives it a somewhat medical vibe. But that’s not all, the battery box underneath the bike’s central spine is also able to swivel, allowing for dynamic weight balance adjustments. This is achieved through Yamaha’s Active Mass Center Control System (AMCES), which connects the swingarm and battery box, causing them to tilt together. Surprisingly, the front wheel steers in a conventional manner, despite its bulky appearance. However, looking at the handlebars reveals that they are rigid handgrips with no mechanical linkage to steer the front wheel. The control mechanism for this bike remains unclear, but it seems to rely on a combination of electronic steering and AMCES technology to self-balance and move without any rider input. Riders can communicate with the Motoroid 2 through facial recognition and gestures, commanding it to follow them around. These features were also present in the original Motoroid concept, which made its debut around six years ago. The latest version of the Motoroid has undergone some cosmetic changes, including new bodywork and a striking headlight unit. Additionally, it now features a unique set of translucent white body panels with blue mood lighting. These panels can be flipped upward, causing the seat to tilt towards the rear wheel. Yamaha hasn’t provided a clear reason for this feature, but it might serve as storage space or simply a visual display. The company claims that the Motoroid 2 provides a lifelike experience for the rider and feels like a lifelong companion, even without the previously featured hip-gripping arms. While the Motoroid 2 showcases Yamaha’s innovative concept, it is not intended for production. Nevertheless, Yamaha has taken the effort to create a functioning, self-balancing version of this unique AI motorcycle concept, and has now introduced an enhanced second-generation version. This upcoming concept will be showcased at the Events Japan Mobility Show 2023. Source: Yamaha
