Paul Reubens, the actor famous for his beloved Pee-wee Herman character, tragically passed away in July at the age of 70. Reports now confirm that his cause of death was “acute hypoxic respiratory failure,” a condition in which the lungs fail to release enough oxygen into the bloodstream, resulting in organ dysfunction.
In addition to respiratory failure, Reubens was also battling two forms of cancer. One of these cancers was acute myelogenous leukemia, which originates in the bone marrow and often quickly spreads to the blood. According to the American Cancer Society, the other cancer was metastatic lung cancer, a type that becomes advanced when it spreads to the other lung or other parts of the body.
After his passing, plans were made for Reubens to be interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles following his cremation.

Although Reubens kept his battles with cancer private during his lifetime, he did share a posthumous statement with his fans in late July. In the statement, he apologized for not publicly revealing his health struggles and expressed gratitude for the love and support he had received throughout his career.
