Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley admonished her own party for their failure to attract support from diverse demographics across the country.
“We’ve lost the last seven out of eight popular votes for president,” revealed the former South Carolina governor and ambassador to the United Nations during an appearance on the “Daily Show” with guest host Charlamagne Tha God. “That’s nothing to be proud of.”
In the last eight elections, the only Republican presidential candidate to secure a majority of U.S. voters was George W. Bush in 2004.
Haley emphasized the importance for Republicans to engage with and appeal to various demographics, including minority groups, women, and younger voters, in order to win the majority. She expressed that Republicans should aspire to secure the support of the majority of people, and criticized the party for selectively determining who is permitted within their ranks.
Polls indicate that the challenge for Republicans lies not in communicating with different groups, but rather in addressing specific issues. On seven out of twelve key issues tracked by Pew, including climate change, abortion rights, and healthcare, voters tend to align more closely with Democratic positions.
Although Haley currently ranks third in most GOP primary voter polls, significantly trailing behind front-runner Donald Trump but gaining ground on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who currently holds second place.
