Unveiling the Top Masters in Management Programs of 2023: Learn about the Rankings, Methodology, and Key Insights

Introducing the FT Masters in Management Ranking

Welcome to the 19th edition of the FT Masters in Management Ranking. This year, 142 MiM programs participated in the ranking process, a significant increase from 135 in the previous year. In order to be eligible for inclusion, schools must meet strict criteria. Their programs must be full-time, cohort-based, and the schools must be accredited by either AACSB or Equis. Additionally, the courses must be directed towards students with little or no work experience. It’s important to note that the ranking evaluates general management programs, not specialized ones.

Methodology

The ranking is calculated using information collected through two separate surveys. The first survey is completed by the business schools, while the second is completed by alumni who finished their MiM in 2020. To enter the ranking calculations, the FT typically requires a response rate of 20% from alumni, with a minimum of 20 responses. However, due to the pandemic, schools with lower response rates were also considered. This year, 7,129 alumni completed the survey, resulting in a response rate of approximately 23%.

The ranking consists of 19 criteria, with alumni responses contributing to eight criteria, accounting for 56% of the total weight. The remaining 11 criteria are calculated from school data and account for 44% of the weight.

Key Criteria

One of the key criteria is the current average (weighted) salary of alumni, which carries the highest weighting at 16%. Local salaries are converted to US dollars using purchasing power parity rates (PPP) provided by the IMF. Full-time student salaries are excluded from the calculation, and the highest and lowest reported salaries are also removed to ensure normalization.

Salary increase is another important criterion, accounting for 10% of the ranking. This criterion is based on the average difference in alumni salary between their first job after completing the MiM program and their current salary, three years after graduation. Both the absolute salary increase and the relative percentage increase are taken into account.

When available, data from the past three years is used for alumni criteria, with responses from 2023 carrying 50% of the weight, and responses from 2022 and 2021 each accounting for 25%. For criteria unrelated to salary, if only two years of data are available, the weighting is split either as 60:40 (2023 and 2022) or 70:30 (2023 and 2021). For salary figures, the weight is either 50:50 for two years of data or 50:25:25 for three years of data, in order to negate any inflation-related distortions.

Other criteria include measuring the diversity of teaching staff, board members, and students according to gender and citizenship, as well as the international reach of the program. In terms of gender criteria, schools with a balanced 50:50 (male: female) composition receive the highest score. International diversity is calculated based on the percentage of international students and faculty, as well as the proportion of students and faculty by citizenship.

Ranking Calculation

To calculate the ranking, each school is assigned a score. Z-scores, which reflect the range of scores between the top and bottom school, are first calculated for each ranking criterion. These scores are then weighted and added together to determine the final score. Schools are then ranked according to these scores, resulting in the final ranking.

It’s important to note that schools that did not meet the alumni response rate threshold are excluded from the ranking calculations. The ranking process involves multiple iterations, with the lowest-ranked school being removed after each iteration, until the final ranking is determined.

Additional Information

Other information in the table, such as program length, number of students enrolled, overall satisfaction, and the percentage of students undertaking internships, does not contribute to the ranking. These details are provided for informational purposes only.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that Judith Pizer of Pizer-MacMillan and Avner Cohen acted as the FT’s database consultants for this ranking.
