- The UK has similar levels seen in Sweden, Norway and Germany, experts said
More than a quarter of middle-aged women in the UK are considered “fit but fat,” according to researchers. They are calling for more efforts to help these individuals reduce their weight.
Academics have identified regional differences in the levels of “metabolically healthy obesity” in the UK. This could be attributed to various factors such as diet, lifestyle, ethnicity, and genetics.
People who fall into the category of “fit but fat,” including almost one in ten middle-aged men in the UK, have a body mass index (BMI) score indicating obesity but do not exhibit any of the complications typically associated with obesity, such as abnormal blood sugar levels, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or signs of heart disease.
Experts have found similar levels of metabolically healthy obesity in the UK, Sweden, Norway, and Germany. However, the highest proportion of metabolically healthy obesity is observed in France and other Mediterranean countries like Italy and Israel, as stated at the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
Academics said that there are large regional differences
