Discover the world’s largest reciprocating diesel engine brought to you by Finland-based Wärtsilä Corporation. This exceptional engine is designed specifically to power the world’s biggest cargo ships, delivering astounding performance and reliability.
Standing at an impressive height of nearly 43 feet and measuring 85 feet long, the RT-flex96C, a 14-cylinder colossus, weighs an astonishing 2,300 tons. Its crankshaft alone weighs a staggering 300 tons, while each piston towers at almost 20 feet and weighs more than five tons. To put its massive size into perspective, the iconic Hollywood sign in Los Angeles stands at 45 feet tall, while an average blue whale measures around 80 to 90 feet in length. Surprisingly, 13 blue whales together weigh less than this remarkable engine, totaling around 2,000 tons.
The RT-flex96C boasts an impressive displacement of nearly 25,500 liters, which is equivalent to approximately 3,187 Bugatti Chiron engines. It generates a mind-blowing 108,920 horsepower at 102 rpm and delivers a staggering 5.6 million pound-feet of torque. Additionally, this powerhouse consumes a whopping 250 tons of fuel per day, utilizing over 39 barrels of oil every hour. Its operational cost reaches around $34 per minute, although this may vary depending on the fluctuating price of oil.
Ships propelled by the RT-flex96C are capable of transporting a staggering 11,000 20-foot long shipping containers at an impressive speed of 25 to 31 knots. In comparison, most cargo ships are limited to around 20 knots. This significant advantage allows RT-flex96C powered vessels to reach China from the US four days faster. Currently, there are only 25 of these extraordinary Wärtsilä engines in existence, with another 86 under construction as of April 2023.
