Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s Apology and Letters of Support for Danny Masterson

People became upset on social media when they learned that Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher had written letters requesting a lighter sentence for Danny Masterson, who has been convicted of rape – and they were further disappointed by the couple’s formal apology.

In a video shared on Instagram Saturday, Kunis and Kutcher addressed the backlash surrounding their letters and acknowledged the harm they had caused.

“They were intended for the judge to read and not to undermine the testimony of the victims or retraumatize them in any way,” Kutcher stated in the video. “We would never want to do that, and we’re sorry if that has taken place.”

“Our hearts go out to every single person who has ever been a victim of sexual assault, sexual abuse, or rape,” added Kunis.

In May, Masterson was convicted of two counts of rape in his retrial and was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison by Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo of the Los Angeles Superior Court last week.

Prior to the sentencing, nearly 50 individuals wrote letters in support of Masterson’s character, requesting leniency from Olmedo. Both Kunis and Kutcher, who co-starred with Masterson on “That ’70s Show,” wrote separate letters.

In their publicly available letters, both Kunis and Kutcher testified to Masterson’s “exceptional character” and described him as a role model. Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith, who played Kitty and Red Foreman on “That ’70s Show,” also submitted letters in support.

Chrissie Carnell Bixler, an ex-girlfriend of Masterson and one of his accusers, expressed disappointment in Kunis for her involvement and suggested that Kunis seek therapy for her experiences on the set of “That ’70s Show,” as reported by Page Six.

Critics of the support letters also pointed out that Kutcher co-founded Thorn, an organization dedicated to combatting child sex trafficking and abuse, yet was willing to defend Masterson.

Their subsequent apology received negative responses on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis admit that they were trying to protect a rapist from receiving a severe sentence. Honestly, we don’t want you to do any more work,” commented one individual on X. “Anything they do in the future is just part of an agenda.”

“Ashton and Mila should fire their PR person because that video was rough,” added another.
