Despite battling through 17 double-faults and almost facing elimination, Coco Gauff exhibited her mental toughness at the WTA Finals on Friday, securing a spot in the semi-finals by defeating Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in their round-robin match in Cancun, Mexico.
Reflecting on her performance, Gauff expressed her satisfaction with her mental resilience, stating, “That was a tough match. She’s not an easy player. Not easy conditions. And I stayed in there, every point, just fighting.”
Gauff will now go head-to-head with her friend and doubles partner, Jessica Pegula, in an exciting all-American match that will determine a place in the final. The other semi-final will feature world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka against Iga Swiatek, the former top-ranked player.
Swiatek dominated her group by defeating Ons Jabeur 6-1, 6-2, while Sabalenka secured her spot in the semi-finals with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Elena Rybakina. Sabalenka finished second in her group, behind the unbeaten Pegula.
