Unveiling the Incredible Links: Discover Menendez’s Agent Role for Egypt

Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey faces additional trouble as federal prosecutors have revised their indictment against him, accusing him of acting as a foreign agent for Egypt. The new indictment, filed in Manhattan federal court on Thursday, alleges that Menendez violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act. This act requires individuals to register with the US government if they are acting as “an agent of a foreign principal.” Menendez’s wife, Nadine Menendez, and a third defendant named Wael Hana are also charged with similar offenses, as reported by the New York Times. Even if Menendez had registered as a foreign agent, his role as a member of Congress would have prohibited him from acting as an agent for a foreign government. The conspiracy allegedly took place from January 2018 to June 2022.

The Guardian previously provided details regarding the allegations relating to Egypt. Menendez allegedly obtained information about the staff working at the US embassy in Cairo from the State Department and shared it with Egyptian officials. Although the information was not classified, it was considered highly sensitive due to potential operational security concerns if disclosed to a foreign government or made public. The new indictment also accuses Menendez of utilizing his influence to increase military sales to Egypt in exchange for bribes, according to the Times.

This latest charge follows the recent bribery allegations against the Democrat senator and his wife. They were accused of accepting cash, gold bars, and a luxury car from three businessmen in New Jersey who sought the senator’s help and influence in foreign affairs. Both Menendez and his wife pleaded not guilty to these charges. Despite mounting calls for his resignation, Menendez has defiantly pushed back against the federal corruption charges. Last month, he claimed that the nearly half a million dollars in cash found in his home was from personal savings, not bribes, and was intended for emergencies. (Read more Bob Menendez stories.)
