Unveiling the Consequences of a Tax-and-Spend Sinn Féin Government: Letters of Caution

A Sinn Féin-led government, potentially with support from People Before Profit, Labour, the Social Democrats, and the Green Party, is a realistic possibility. However, this could be risky for a country heavily reliant on tax revenues from multinational corporations, high-earners, investors, and employers. It is unlikely that these groups would be willing to pay the new and increased taxes proposed by Sinn Féin and other parties.

Despite claims of moving towards the center, Sinn Féin’s taxation plans do not reflect this. They intend to impose higher taxes on the most mobile segments of society, such as employment taxes, income tax, wealth taxes, property taxes, and inheritance taxes. It is unclear how Sinn Féin plans to implement these tax increases without negatively affecting the open economy, trade and investment, employment rates, and tax revenues.

Adding to this economic uncertainty is the possibility of higher interest rates in the eurozone, as indicated by Christine Lagarde’s recent ECB guidance. This will have a detrimental effect on Irish borrowing costs, making it difficult to recover from.

Furthermore, it is reasonable to assume that Sinn Féin will make policy moves towards their primary objective of a unified socialist state. The economic implications of these actions would impact Ireland.

Sinn Féin’s populist, leftist economic narrative lacks credibility. The proposed socialist economic model would significantly damage our enterprise economy as incentives decline.

Keep the Universal Social Charge (USC) and allocate it specifically to fund long-term care for older citizens. The current Fair Deal system, which involves using older people’s assets to pay for their care, is unfair and goes against social conscience. A socially just system would require everyone to contribute to long-term care through the USC, while those in need would have a statutory entitlement to receive care.

Instead of having an illness industry, we should prioritize an ill-health prevention service. The government should invest time and resources in schools to educate students and teenagers on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Gender equality schemes should focus on encouraging more men to enter traditionally female-dominated professions like nursing and primary school teaching. The current emphasis on increasing female representation is commendable, but it overlooks the need for gender equality in these fields.

Despite offering accommodation for refugees, the offer went unheeded, and people are now living in tents. The author contacted a charity to offer two double bedrooms in their home but faced unnecessary requirements and costs. They were asked to engage a plumber and electrician to ensure the safety of the house, which would have cost an additional €900. The author refused but still wished to be considered for future accommodation opportunities, but received no further communication.

There has been an overuse of the term “fascist” in Irish political discourse, without appropriate justification. The author agrees with Ian O’Doherty’s article, which criticizes groundless accusations of fascism. The author highlights the irony of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his government applauding a former Waffen-SS soldier in the Canadian parliament.

The quality of guests on The Late Late Show is declining, with many appearing to promote their own projects. This trend is causing a loss of interest in the once-great show.
