A recent cyberattack on the Better Outcomes Registry & Network (BORN) in Canada has resulted in the exposure of the health data of millions of individuals, primarily those seeking pregnancy care and newborn babies. Canadian security experts have expressed their disappointment, stating that proper protective measures could have prevented the breach. Former Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian emphasized that de-identifying the data by removing personal details would have provided stronger protection in the event of a breach. BORN has acknowledged the breach and informed the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC). As of now, there is no searchable database for affected individuals to check if their data has been compromised. The breach occurred due to a vulnerability in the file transfer software MOVEit, allowing hackers to copy files containing healthcare information from BORN’s servers.
