But here’s something interesting that I learned from a video by Marques Brownlee: Amazon has actually ordered these vans in two different sizes. They’re both based on the same front-wheel drive architecture and can travel around 150 miles on a single charge, which is more than enough for a day of deliveries.
The driver cockpit area is designed for ease of use, with most controls integrated into a touch screen. However, Amazon made sure to keep a physical button for the emergency flashers, as it’s something that drivers frequently use. The cockpit itself is spacious, providing excellent visibility and user-friendly mirrors.
When it comes to doors, the Amazon van has a traditional swing-open door on the driver’s side, but on the passenger side, it features a sliding pocket door to make it easier for drivers to enter and exit the vehicle without colliding with pedestrians. My personal favorite door feature is the rear roll-up door, which can self-retract at the push of a button. This ingenious design saves drivers from the hassle of manually lifting a heavy door.
To accommodate these electric vans, Amazon’s loading and shipping facilities have large charging docks for overnight charging. Thankfully, most drivers won’t even come close to using the full range of the Rivian’s battery, so range anxiety is not a concern.
Overall, the Amazon delivery van is a sleek and efficient machine. It’s a shame that the US Postal Service didn’t choose these vans for their mail deliveries.
