Unveiling Renee Bach’s Current Whereabouts: Post-HBO ‘Savior Complex’ Doc Exposure

American missionary Renee Bach, founder of the charity Serving His Children in Uganda, has recently been the focus of a controversial HBO documentary titled “Savior Complex.” But the story of Bach and her organization goes back to 2009 when she established Serving His Children after a missionary trip to Uganda. Initially, the charity provided hot meals to children in the area, but it later transformed into a center for malnourished children.

During her time in Uganda, Bach faced allegations that she provided medical care to children without proper qualifications, resulting in the deaths of 105 children. Some families sued her, claiming she lured them away from better-equipped hospitals. However, there are conflicting accounts from individuals like Abner Tagoola, the head of a nearby pediatric hospital, who worked with Bach and believed she acted out of desperation to help sick babies.

An independent investigation by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council found no evidence that Bach provided medical care and could not support allegations that children died due to the services of Serving His Children. Bach and her organization maintained that she never represented herself as a doctor.

Bach’s story gained attention through the campaign led by No White Saviors, an organization founded by Ugandan social worker Olivia Patience Alaso and American social worker Kelsey Nielsen. No White Saviors aims to call out instances of the white savior complex and decolonize development. The campaign against Bach played a significant role in raising awareness of her actions.

Bach settled a civil suit in Uganda regarding the deaths of two children in 2020. The lawsuit alleged that she made medical decisions and performed procedures without supervision. She settled the suit and agreed to pay approximately $9,500 to each mother, without admitting liability.

In January 2021, four more Ugandan families filed lawsuits against Bach, claiming that their children died or suffered health problems after receiving treatment at Serving His Children. The legal actions requested criminal charges be brought against Bach.

These controversial events have been extensively covered by media outlets, including NPR, The New Yorker, and The Guardian. The recent HBO documentary “Savior Complex” provides further insight into Bach’s story. While Bach’s actions have sparked intense debate and criticism, her case is a complex one with conflicting accounts and ongoing legal battles.
