Unveiling Queen Elizabeth I’s Sole Surviving Gown: Witness London’s Royal Relics and Glorious Treasures!

The only surviving dress worn by Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) is now on display in a new museum exhibit in London. Alongside the dress, visitors can also see a glove worn by Queen Elizabeth II at her coronation in 1953 and Charles Dickens’ court suit. The exhibit, titled “Treasures of Gold and Silver Wire,” showcases 400 years of fine craftsmanship in London. Over 200 items, including centuries-old robes, contemporary jewelry, and theatrical costumes, are featured in the exhibition. One of the highlights is the 16th century Bacton Altar Cloth, believed to be part of Queen Elizabeth I’s dress.

The exhibition also includes a robe worn by David Tennant in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of “Richard II” and costumes from the TV show “The Crown,” worn by Claire Foy and Matt Smith. Queen Mary’s coronation dress, adorned with gold and silver silk thread, from 1911, as well as the crown and gold robe worn by Dame Helen Mirren when she played Cleopatra, are other notable exhibits.

The exhibition is curated by Dr. Karen Watts of the Royal Armories and is in honor of the 400th anniversary of the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers. Munsur Ali, chair of the City of London Corporation’s Culture, Heritage and Libraries Committee, described the exhibition as a feast for the senses and expressed pride in hosting it as part of their Destination City program.

The Guildhall Art Gallery, located in the Moorgate area of London, houses the art collection of the City of London. The museum is a stone building in a semi-Gothic style, designed to be sympathetic to the historic Guildhall. Catherine Carr, involved in the exhibition, stated that it showcases the beautiful application of gold and silver wire over the centuries and offers an opportunity to view unmatched examples of gold and silver wiredrawing.

The exhibition aims to provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the exhibits’ social, cultural, and historic contexts. The creativity, attention to detail, patience, and technology involved in their design are also emphasized. “Treasures of Gold and Silver Wire” will be at the Guildhall Art Gallery for six weeks until November 12th. The exhibit opened on September 29th.
