When it comes to the Toronto Raptors, Fred VanVleet has been their voice for the past two NBA seasons, whether on the court, in the locker room, or in front of cameras and microphones.
However, with VanVleet signing a lucrative free-agent deal with the Houston Rockets in the off-season, the Raptors are left searching for a new leader. It remains to be seen if one player will step up or if it will be a collective effort.
Various players and team president Masai Ujiri have their own thoughts on how the leadership situation will unfold this season.
“I wouldn’t say I see an obvious choice,” said shooting guard Gary Trent Jr. during the Raptors’ training camp. “Leadership is something that comes naturally. It’s not something you can appoint someone to do.”
“For me, it’s all about a person’s actions and how they respond to certain situations. It’s about showing leadership through your behavior and having others follow suit,” Trent added.
Trent emphasized that each player brings their own unique qualities to the team, and as the Raptors’ season progresses, it will become evident who can positively impact the locker room.
