The leaked data also shows that Google’s average minimum base salary is lowest in expensive areas like New York City and Silicon Valley. In NYC, the reported average minimum base salary is $48,000, which is barely enough to cover the cost of living in 2023. Similarly, in the San Francisco Bay Area, the average minimum base salary is just $39,962. This disparity in pay is troubling, as it affects the financial well-being of employees in already expensive cities.

The leaked salary data reveals that Black employees at Google earn over $20,000 less on average compared to their white or Asian counterparts. This pay gap extends to other racial and ethnic groups, including Indigenous and Hispanic/Latino employees. The issue seems to stem from company culture, as the majority of Google’s American staff is either Asian or White.

The leaked spreadsheet also includes data on gender-based compensation, which largely aligns with existing stereotypes. However, there are exceptions. Female employees in “enterprise direct sales” and female sales strategists appear to earn more than their male counterparts in base salary. Additionally, nonbinary employees in software engineering positions earn less in base salary compared to their male and female colleagues. These findings suggest that gender-based pay disparities exist within Google, but there are some areas where women excel.

When questioned about the leaked data, a Google spokesperson emphasized that the company compensates employees based on their job responsibilities rather than their identity. The spokesperson also stated that Google conducts an annual pay equity analysis to ensure fair compensation. However, they dismissed the leaked spreadsheet as outdated and unverified, claiming it does not accurately represent compensation across the entire workforce.

While the accuracy of the leaked data is up for debate, one undeniable fact is that Google employees are among the highest-paid in the tech industry. Including bonuses and equity stakes, the median total compensation for the average Googler in 2022 was $279,802. It should be noted that the leaked spreadsheet only covers up to level seven out of 11, so some employees earn significantly more than what is reported.
