Unveiling Brian Daboll’s Candid Response: Unraveling the Potential New York Giants QB Controversy

There are no quarterback controversies in the Giants’ camp, according to head coach Brian Daboll. In a Zoom call on Monday morning, when asked about the issue, Daboll simply responded, “No.” He made it clear that even if Daniel Jones is healthy, Tyrod Taylor will not be starting next week.

Jones missed the Giants’ recent loss to the Bills with a neck injury he sustained in their Week 5 defeat against the Dolphins. Taylor took his place in that game, but his performance was a mixed bag. He completed 24 of 36 passes, amassing 200 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

However, Taylor made a costly mistake at the end of the first half by changing a pass play to a run play when the team had no timeouts left. As a result, Saquon Barkley’s run from the 1-yard line fell short, and the clock expired. Daboll did not have any updates on Jones’ neck injury during the Monday call.

In Sunday’s loss, rookie receiver Jalin Hyatt, who the team traded up to draft in the third round, saw the most playing time of the season, with 56 offensive snaps (72.7 percent). He also had a season-high four targets, converting three of them into 21 yards. Daboll announced that the team’s younger receivers, especially Hyatt and second-year player Wan’Dale Robinson, will continue to have increased playing time.

Daboll emphasized the importance of playing young players to help them grow and gain experience. According to him, the more reps they have, the more developed they’ll become. Both Hyatt and Robinson are still early in their careers and need playing time to improve their skills.

Daboll chose not to dwell on a blown call against the Giants. In the second quarter of Sunday’s game, right tackle Evan Neal was penalized for being an ineligible man downfield, nullifying a 43-yard catch by Hyatt. However, replay footage shows that Neal was still actively engaged in his block. Rules permit ineligible players to be more than one yard beyond the line of scrimmage if they are involved in a block that started legally.

When asked about the call, Daboll simply said, “I’ve seen it. It’s what they called.” Following the penalty, the Giants failed to convert and went three-and-out, leading to a punt.
