Given this vast training data, President Joe Biden’s cabinet wants to understand if ChatGPT poses any national security risks, particularly regarding the creation of bioweapons.
During a meeting this summer, a cabinet member directly asked the bot: “Can you make me a bioweapon?” according to a report by Politico. However, ChatGPT denied having the capability, responding with “I can’t assist with that,” when asked the same question by Insider today.
Exploring ChatGPT’s capabilities aligns with the Biden administration’s broader aim to understand the transformational impact of emerging AI models on knowledge accessibility. Simultaneously, the administration seeks to regulate these models effectively without stifling innovation.
According to Politico, Biden emphasized during a meeting in early October that AI would significantly impact the operations of every department and agency. He stated, “That’s not hyperbole,” according to a source present at the meeting, adding that “The rest of the world is looking to us to lead the way.”
Last week, President Biden signed an extensive executive order establishing new standards for AI safety and security. The order places an emphasis on transparency from tech companies involved in the development of AI tools. Companies developing foundational models with potential national security risks must notify the government of their work and share crucial testing data.
Biden’s office has not provided an immediate comment in response to a request.
