In a stunning twist, Congressman Mike Johnson, a relatively unknown Republican from Louisiana, has emerged as the new Speaker of the House. However, a new ad is shedding light on his controversial past.
Courage for America, a non-profit organization, has released a 44-second video targeting Johnson. The ad begins by showing footage of GOP lawmakers booing a reporter who questioned Johnson’s support for former President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
The video poses the question, “Who is Speaker Mike Johnson?” It then answers by describing him as a “MAGA extremist,” an “election denier,” and a “mistake as speaker,” noting his leading role in the efforts to overturn Trump’s defeat.

Courage For America, which defines itself as “a council of proud Americans speaking out against an extremist agenda that puts money and power over our rights and freedoms,” provides more information on its website.
According to spokesperson José Morales Jr., who spoke to The Daily Beast, Congressman Mike Johnson is a true MAGA extremist and election denier. Morales added, “He has no business being Speaker.”
On X (formerly Twitter), the group describes Johnson as “extreme and anti-democracy.”
Johnson secured the role of Speaker after a tumultuous three weeks for Republicans, during which they ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy and failed to gain sufficient support for Reps. Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan, and Tom Emmer on the House floor.
