Over 6,330 kilograms of liquid and crystal methamphetamine have been confiscated in Metro Vancouver. These drugs were hidden in 419 canola oil jugs that were intended for export to Australia.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) conducted four separate busts between December and May, with one of them being the largest methamphetamine seizure to date, according to Metro Vancouver District Pacific Region director Rahul Coelho.
During the inspections, officers noticed irregularities in these shipments,” said Coelho during a press conference on Tuesday. “Our officers utilized a variety of detection tools and technology including x-ray imaging and detector dogs.”
Five Australian citizens and one American citizen have been arrested in connection with these operations.
The first seizure occurred on December 13, 2022, at the Burnaby Container Examination Facility and Commercial Operations. CBSA officers seized 40 jugs containing 204 kg of crystal methamphetamine.
The second seizure took place on January 22 at the Tsawwassen Container Examination Facility and Commercial Operations. Officers discovered 180 jugs containing 2,907 kg of liquid methamphetamine. This is the largest seizure in the history of the organization, with enough meth to fill 35 large suitcases, according to CBSA.
In May, at the same facility, officers found another 19 jugs containing 325 kg of liquid meth, followed by 180 more jugs carrying 2,898 kg of liquid meth later that month. The total amount seized in all four operations is more than triple the amount confiscated by CBSA in the Pacific region between 2018 and 2022 in 653 individual busts.
