Unlocking the Truth: Declining Intimacy in Women’s Early 50s

It’s no secret that discussing one’s sex life is often considered taboo. However, a groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at the University of East Anglia aims to shed light on the sexual experiences of Britons. This study surveyed over 5,000 individuals to better understand the average sex lives of both men and women in the UK. The findings bring good news to those who haven’t been sexually active, as it turns out they are not alone. According to the results, a majority of Britons have either had zero or only one sexual partner in the past three weeks. Dr. Julii Brainard, who led the study, says, “Often people assume everyone else is having lots of sex, but surveys like this show the real story is a lot more complicated.”

The study examined the sexual habits of different age groups, shedding light on the varying levels of sexual activity between men and women. The percentages of individuals who reported having had recent sexual encounters are illustrated in the graph below.

The study, which took place last year, surveyed more than 5,000 individuals in Britain. Participants were asked if they had engaged in sexual activity in the previous three weeks. Interestingly, only 31% of heterosexual women aged 45 to 49 reported having zero sexual partners during that time frame. However, this figure jumped to 47% for women aged 50 to 54. Among women in their early sixties, approximately two-thirds had abstained from sex for at least three weeks. This data includes women who are not sexually active with their partners or who are single, potentially following a midlife divorce. On the other hand, the number of heterosexual men who reported no recent sexual activity did not significantly increase with age.

Dr. Brainard states, “These results could be viewed as good news for older women who are having less sex than when they were younger, as they can know they are normal.” Only 31% of heterosexual women aged 45 to 49 reported having zero sexual partners in the previous three weeks, while that number increases to 47% for women aged 50 to 54.

These findings come from a study that aimed to understand the risk of infection from mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) among gay and bisexual men, heterosexual men, and heterosexual women. The study suggests that as individuals age, their sexual frequency tends to decrease. This decline occurs at a younger age and more drastically among heterosexual women. Among women surveyed in their late twenties and early thirties, approximately a quarter reported no sexual partners in the past three weeks. This percentage increased to around 37% for women in their late thirties and early forties, and reached 31% for women in their late forties. However, an abrupt jump occurred with 47% of women in their early fifties reporting no recent sexual activity, followed by 52% of women in their late fifties. By the time women reached their sixties, around two-thirds of them had not engaged in sex in the previous three weeks, with over three-quarters of women in their seventies reporting the same.

For heterosexual men, about half of them reported having had recent sexual encounters, a percentage that remained relatively steady across different age groups, from late forties to 75 and older. Men may avoid a decline in sexual activity during middle age by having younger partners who are more interested in sex. Alternatively, male pride may play a role, as men may be less likely to admit or remember a lack of recent sexual activity, while women may be more inclined to underreport their sexual experiences.

This study, published in the journal PLOS One, revealed that very few British heterosexual individuals had two or more different sexual partners in the past three weeks. The highest percentage of individuals in this category was found among 18 to 24-year-olds, with around 14% reporting multiple recent sexual partners.

In other news, Spotify has compiled a list of top songs people listen to during sex. Some of the songs on this year’s list include “Earned It” by The Weeknd, “Birthday Sex” by Jeremih, and “Sex With Me” by Rihanna. Additionally, a new app called Bed Beats allows couples to customize their sex playlists based on their movements during sex.
