Unlocking the Millennial Obsession: Rising Upper East Side Style Icons

Experience the epitome of street style photography: the glamorous Upper East Side.

Joshua Kamei has taken the world by storm with his @LadiesofMadisonAve Instagram and TikTok accounts, where he captures the New York socialites, their fashion, and the captivating stories behind them.

“I have a passion for glamour and this city, so I started reporting on it,” said Kamei, a 39-year-old Hell’s Kitchen resident.

Kamei, a fashion designer, started the account in 2020 as a side project that has now garnered immense popularity. The Instagram page boasts 195k followers, while the TikTok account has 122,000 followers.

What sets Kamei apart from other digital street photographers and videographers is his genuine admiration for his subjects, who are mostly older women aged 40 to 95. He appreciates their timeless class and elegance, which resonates with his followers in a sea of similar content.

Through still images and engaging videos, Kamei captures the essence of the upper Manhattan social scene. The subjects, although diverse in their style choices, exude a sophisticated, Upper East Side vibe.

His photography features various individuals, from a tastefully dressed older couple waiting at a stoplight, to former Welsh model and Vogue creative director Grace Coddington strolling down Park Avenue, to a young couple attending an opera, with the woman donning her mother’s elegant charcoal skirt.

“I love being able to tell a generational story,” Kamei expressed.

One of his favorite local fashionistas is an elderly blonde woman, whose name remains unknown. Kamei recently captured her wearing a black Fendi dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld, featuring a boat neckline. He considers her one of the gems of Madison Avenue, which inspired his project “The Ladies of Madison Avenue.”

“Age is not a prerequisite for being chic,” Kamei emphasized, despite the majority of his subjects being in their later years. He grew up idolizing Audrey Hepburn and his glamorous grandmother in Jackson, Mississippi, and believes that timeless style comes from an inner presence rather than age.

Kamei primarily focuses his lens on the Upper East Side, although he occasionally ventures downtown. He explains that there are already countless photographers capturing downtown scenes, so he prefers to stay true to his niche.

ABC News correspondent Deborah Roberts made an appearance on the account earlier this month.

Surprisingly, although Kamei documents older women, his followers mainly fall within the 25 to 35 age range.

“I think they look up to these women and aspire to be like them when they grow up,” he explained.
