Unlocking Success: Inside Coach Brian Daboll’s Mentorship of Promising QB Daniel Jones

Q: You’ve been down at halftime in all three games. Why have you struggled with early starts? A: “We’ve faced tough opponents and we’ve managed to score points despite falling behind. It’s important to start fast and make plays when given the opportunity. Credit to the opposing team, they did a good job. We came back strong in the second half, but they played well. We’ll analyze our performance and work on improving for the next game.”

Q: Why were you unable to get off the field on third down defensively? A: “In the first half, they converted on seven out of nine third downs. Some of their successful plays were screen passes where they caught the ball and ran with it. We need to be better at rallying to the ball and making tackles. Third-down conversions played a significant role in dominating the time of possession for both teams. When you struggle to convert third downs offensively and give up third downs defensively, it affects the time of possession. Our defense gets tired, and we don’t have enough offensive opportunities. It’s a collective effort that needs improvement.”

Q: The running game seemed lacking without Saquon Barkley. Were you disappointed with the performance? A: “Again, credit to the opposing team. They are strong competition, and there’s room for improvement in every aspect of our game. We’ll get back to work, make necessary adjustments, and come back stronger.”

Q: Did the opposing team do anything specific to limit Daniel Jones? A: “No, they played their defense. They have a fast, talented, and aggressive team. Nothing in particular.”

Q: How would you assess Daniel Jones’ performance? A: “I’ll review the tape on our way back. I’m sure there are plays he would like to redo, just like everyone else.”

Q: Were the offensive limitations due to injuries? A: “No excuses. We can always do a better job.”

Q: Despite being shorthanded, can you find any positives from the game? A: “We need to learn from the mistakes and take the good aspects from the game, just like in any other game. Our players competed until the end, but the opposing team made more plays. We’ll analyze our performance and move forward to the next week.”

Q: The missed tackles were noticeable. Do you think limited practice time affected the team’s performance? A: “No, no excuses. None at all.”

Q: What led to the decision of starting Mark Glowinski at right guard? A: “As a coaching staff, we discussed it and decided to give Glowinski an opportunity to play at left or right guard or provide backup support. We wanted to see how he would perform.”

Q: What did you witness during the skirmish at the end of the first half? A: “I saw a couple of punches thrown, and then the referees intervened. I couldn’t see the whole situation, but punches were exchanged.”

Q: There were reports about Saquon’s high ankle sprain. Does that make it challenging for a player to recover? A: “Saquon has improved considerably. He informed me that he wouldn’t be able to play the next day after our initial conversation. We ruled him out and will assess his progress for the following week. He’s able to walk around.”

Q: There were a couple of plays where there seemed to be opportunities to get the ball to Darren Waller. Can you comment on those? A: “One play was an over and the other was a double move. We missed on both occasions. The overthrown pass happened when the game was close, and the other play had tight coverage. We’ll look into those missed opportunities.”

Q: Is it a catch that Waller should have made? A: “The pass was a bit high and overthrown.”

Q: It seemed like you didn’t take many deep shots in the game. Were they taking that option away? A: “We called several deep passes such as high-Vs, crossers, and middle posts. However, there were instances where protection broke down or they covered our targets. It’s a delicate balance considering the defensive line of the opposing team. You have to decide how many players to keep in for protection while attempting vertical routes. Once again, credit to the opposing team for their strong performance.”

Q: Without Saquon, does play action become less effective since the defense doesn’t have to focus on him? A: “There are no excuses regarding any player’s absence or performance. We must go out there, compete, and strive to win games. No excuses whatsoever.”

Q: Do you think the illegal contact penalty on Kayvon Thibodeaux was within the five yards? A: “Yes, but apparently it wasn’t according to the officials.”

Q: Your team had some costly penalties. Were some of them questionable? A: “The officials make the calls based on what they see. They have a challenging job to do. Once again, no excuses. We won’t make any excuses for our performance.”

Q: Did you receive an explanation for Leonard Williams’ roughing the passer penalty? A: “He landed on the quarterback with full body contact. I understand why they called it.”

Q: Considering the quality of the 49ers, who are considered one of the best teams, does this game serve as a lesson for your team on what it takes to reach the top of the league? A: “Every week, we need to bring our best. The 49ers are indeed a strong team, but we face tough opponents every week. There’s a lot of work to be done on our end. We’ll learn from our mistakes, build on the positive aspects, and prepare for the next game.”

Q: With 11 days before the next game, do you think Saquon can recover in time? A: “We’ll see. He has been making progress and feeling better each day. I don’t want to give a specific timeline. We’ll assess his condition and make a decision accordingly.”

Q: After spending six days on the West Coast, do you still have confidence in your team? A: “We just suffered a loss, so naturally, we aren’t content. However, I have complete confidence in the individuals in our team. We have a lot of work to do, and we’ll put in the effort without making any excuses. We’ll have a productive week of practice.”

Q: Do you have any information regarding the severity of Deonte Banks’ and D.J. Davidson’s injuries? A: “I haven’t spoken to Ronnie Barnes yet. From what I observed, Banks seemed to have an arm injury, and Davidson injured his elbow.”

Q: What was the rationale behind calling timeouts at the end of the game and putting Tyrod Taylor in? A: “I wanted to give Tyrod an opportunity to…” (incomplete)
