Unlocking Safer Roads: Why a Strategic Shift in Speed Limits Is Imperative for Our Communities

Yesterday marked the third National Slow Down Day this year, highlighting our approach to enforcing speed limits. While roads have natural speed limits that are safe to drive at, many of our roads were not designed with motor vehicles in mind. Instead of implementing blanket decreases to speed limits, we should determine the natural speed limits of each road and enforce them with speed cameras. This may require more effort and expense, but it is necessary to prioritize safety over convenience. Ultimately, lives depend on our commitment to reducing accidents on our roads.

The recent changes to speed limits may not have the desired impact on road safety. Simply changing signs and increasing the presence of speed vans will not deter those who continue to speed. Additionally, well-meaning drivers who alert others to speed vans or police checks undermine their effectiveness. It would be more effective to utilize existing technology in cars to enforce speed limits. With this technology, cars could automatically adjust their speed based on the limit of the road, reducing the need for external enforcement measures. However, this would require time for all cars to adopt the technology.

As we approach the Rugby World Cup, it’s important to recognize the role referees play in determining the outcome of matches. In rugby, the referee has the power to penalize one side or the other in every ruck, maul, and breakdown, as well as in scrums. Sometimes, these decisions can be the difference between winning and losing in a close match. Therefore, to win the World Cup, it may not be enough for a team to be the best on the field; they also need favorable decisions from the referee.

In light of the shortfall in refugee accommodation, it would be wise for the government to consider utilizing the space available at Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of the President of Ireland. With the help of the Office of Public Works, vetting and safety measures could be put in place to ensure the President’s security is not compromised. Taking such action would demonstrate Ireland’s commitment to welcoming refugees and could serve as a lasting legacy for President Michael D Higgins.

Primary school class sizes have been a topic of debate recently, but reducing class sizes alone will not lead to better educational outcomes. In my experience as a teacher, the quality of teaching is more important than the number of students in the classroom. I have taught classes with over 30 students that were successful and memorable, as well as smaller classes that were challenging. Ultimately, the quality of education throughout primary school is what truly matters.
