Unlock the Secrets Your Facialist Discovers About You Simply by Analyzing Your Skin

One of the initial steps in a facial involves the aesthetician analyzing your skin up close and personal. While you’re lying down, they closely examine your pores, wrinkles, and ask about your skincare routine and concerns. It can be a bit surprising to have someone scrutinize your clean, bare skin when we typically try to cover up imperfections like acne scars, dark circles, and oily patches.

Aestheticians often provide personalized recommendations for facials and additional treatments based on their assessment. This begs the question: What do these skincare professionals observe about your skin with their expert eyes?

Soyoki Abo, the founder of Abosoyoki in New York City, describes skin analyzing as a detective work. “I take time to observe and analyze my clients’ skin every time I see them,” she says.

Our skin speaks volumes about us, and its needs are constantly changing. Many factors can disrupt our skincare routine, from environmental factors and daily habits to the products we use and hormonal changes in our body.

After speaking with leading aestheticians, it became clear that a close inspection of our faces provides them with more information than we could ever imagine.

What Your Acne Says About Your Lifestyle

Acne is an inevitable annoyance, but an aesthetician can determine the cause behind frequent breakouts by examining the appearance of your acne. For instance, breakouts on the cheeks could be due to poor diet or dirty cellphones, according to Kimberly Currie, a licensed advanced aesthetician. Acne scars may also indicate a history of picking or popping pimples.

For women, hormonal changes can wreak havoc on the skin, causing breakouts that typically appear on specific areas of the face. “Most hormonal breakouts are along the jawline and can extend onto the neck,” says Reon’a Richberg, a master aesthetician at SkinSpirit.

What Your Wrinkles Say About You

Just like a palm reader interprets the lines on your hands, an aesthetician can gather a lot of information from the wrinkles on your face. Every facial movement you make stretches the skin, and repetitive movements can lead to pronounced wrinkles in those areas. Frown lines between the brows may suggest frequent frowning or a concentration face, often seen in individuals who spend a lot of time working on computers, according to Ginille Brown, a registered aesthetic nurse practitioner.

More lines around the eyes, known as crow’s feet, could indicate frequent smiling or squinting due to sun exposure. However, one surprising revelation aestheticians can make by assessing facial wrinkles is our sleeping habits. “I can tell which side of your face you primarily sleep on by looking at the symmetry of your face and whether you have more fine lines, wrinkles, and breakouts on that side,” says Richberg. A flatter and lower cheek on one side may indicate a preference for sleeping on that side.

What They Can Tell From Your Skin Color And Tone

Redness, hyperpigmentation, and irritation can reveal information about your skin and habits. Uneven skin tone or hyperpigmentation may indicate sun exposure, hormonal changes, or previous skin damage, says Currie. Dark spots or patches could indicate sun damage, while melasma (darkening of the skin) may be linked to hormonal fluctuations like pregnancy.

Aesthetician Savannah Frommel suggests that she can tell if you spend a lot of time driving or are more of a passenger. Sun damage is more likely on the left side of the face for frequent drivers due to direct sunlight exposure. This sun exposure breaks down collagen, leading to deeper lines and wrinkles on that side of the face.

For individuals with skin redness, the cause can be less clear. According to Abo, redness can result from harsh products, medications, dryness, sun damage, rosacea, hormonal issues, or allergies.

If aestheticians observe redness, irritation, or inflammation, they may delve deeper into their clients’ daily skincare products to identify any culprits.

The next time you have a facial, challenge your aesthetician by asking about the concerns they observe. You may be surprised by the revelations they can provide.

“It’s important to note that these observations are not definitive diagnoses,” says Currie. “An in-depth consultation with an aesthetician is necessary to accurately assess and address specific skin concerns.”
