It’s official: Nothing Phone 2 users will finally see those coveted blue bubbles. According to the company’s announcement, iMessage is now accessible through the innovative ” Nothing Chats” app, developed in collaboration with messaging platform Sunbird. This highly anticipated feature is scheduled to launch on Friday, November 17th, and will be available in North America, the EU, and select European countries.

Nothing’s motivation behind this move is rooted in their desire to bridge the gap created by messaging service fragmentation. However, trust in Sunbird is essential as the integration requires access to the user’s iCloud account. While Nothing vouches for Sunbird’s privacy and messaging architecture, it’s crucial for users to approach this development with caution and scrutinize Sunbird’s privacy policy.

The Washington Post has experienced Nothing Chats firsthand and found that the functionality is mostly smooth. However, limitations include the absence of certain advanced iMessage features such as message editing, incomplete Tapback reactions, and issues with group chats. Additionally, message delivery may require multiple attempts. It’s noted that users can expect features like typing indicators, uncompressed media sharing, and planned additions like read receipts and message reactions.

Sunbird’s exclusive availability through the Nothing Phone 2 adds an intriguing layer to the narrative. Sunbird’s CEO mentioned that access to Sunbird will be linked to owning a Nothing Phone 2 for the foreseeable future. Interestingly, Beeper, another service offering iMessage on Android and Windows, also requires users to endure an extensive waiting list.

Nothing’s decision to delay the launch to Friday implies a strategic consideration, possibly allowing Apple an opportunity to intervene. The Post quoted Carl Pei, Nothing’s CEO, stating that while the app’s impact may not be revolutionary, it aims to spark a meaningful dialogue. This announcement coincides with the EU’s scrutiny of iMessage’s classification as an Apple “core platform service.”
