OpenAI has just taken an innovative step in the AI marketplace by launching GPTs, giving users the ability to create their own version of ChatGPT, the highly popular conversational AI system. What’s more, users can even publish their GPT on the newly introduced GPT Store, potentially earning money in the process. These features were announced at OpenAI’s first developer day in San Francisco, where they showcased a more hands-off approach to the AI marketplace, following in the footsteps of Apple.
OpenAI believes that empowering people with tools can lead to amazing results. That’s why they are introducing GPTs, custom versions of ChatGPT designed for specific purposes. The best part? No coding experience is required to create a GPT. Whether you want a simple GPT trained on your recipe collection to help you whip up a soup or a complex one for diving into fantasy series lore, it’s all possible.
Founder and CEO Sam Altman explained how easy it is to program a GPT using language alone. During a demonstration, he described to ChatGPT under a “New GPT Draft” that he wanted to make a bot for advising startup founders. By uploading a concise and constructive lecture on improving startups, Altman found his customized GPT ready to go.
OpenAI is also allowing users to integrate external services, such as translation APIs, with their GPTs. However, data handling preferences can be chosen by the users themselves.

OpenAI’s GPT Store is set to make a huge impact, as it will serve as the marketplace for distributing and eventually monetizing these GPTs. The concept of “verified builders” ensures that the GPT Store is free from low-quality or scammy offerings, as demonstrated by GPTs built by reputable entities like Code.org, TripAdvisor, and Canva.
OpenAI’s ambitions are lofty, positioning itself as an independent platform rather than relying on existing app stores and distribution methods. This move may potentially bring OpenAI into direct competition with industry giants like Apple and Microsoft. The monetization of GPT models without involving the App Store’s ecosystem might not sit well with Apple. Additionally, Microsoft is close to launching its own Copilot models, which GPTs could potentially come into conflict with.
However, OpenAI and Microsoft seem to be in good terms for now, with CEO Satya Nadella expressing excitement about their partnership. Yet, the dynamics could change in the coming years.
