Find Calmness Within: Cultivating Inner Peace and Mindfulness
“Some of the greatest battles will be fought within the silent chambers of your own soul.”—Ezra Taft Benson
Calmness is not something that can be found in the external world; it is an inside job. In a world marked by uncertainty and chaos, achieving a sense of calmness might seem like a monumental task. However, by embracing mindfulness and practicing self-care, we can cultivate an inner sense of peace and tranquility.
Mindfulness is a powerful tool for finding calmness. By paying attention to the present moment without judgment, we can anchor ourselves in the now and acknowledge our emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them. Simple practices like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can bring calmness to the mind and body.
I recently had the pleasure of attending a Bikram yoga class at the new studio of Olay Aninion, the owner of Bikram Yoga Makati. Located at 2/F Aguirre Bldg., 108 HV Dela Costa St., Salcedo Village, Makati, this studio offers daily classes and is also available for private and corporate sessions. Bikram Yoga Makati is the first hot yoga studio in the Philippines, and practicing yoga there helps bring back balance and peace of mind.
Another essential aspect of finding calmness is prioritizing self-care. Taking care of our mind, body, and soul is crucial for stability and resilience. Simple daily practices such as getting enough sleep, eating well-balanced meals, exercising, and engaging in activities that bring joy can contribute to a sense of calmness.
It’s important to create boundaries around media consumption to preserve our peace of mind. Allocating specific times of the day to stay informed and limiting exposure to negative or triggering content can help reduce anxiety and feelings of being overwhelmed. Instead, focus on consuming positive and uplifting information.
Building a supportive network is another effective method for maintaining calmness amidst external chaos. Connecting with like-minded individuals or friends and family who share similar experiences or have a calming influence can create a sense of belonging. Having a supportive network provides comfort and helps us navigate difficulties with a calm mindset.
For me, my Assumption Class of 1981 BFFs serve as my supportive network. We have remained close and compassionate toward each other beyond our high school days. This year, we presented a donation to our dear Assumption sisters to help build a new home at the San Lorenzo campus. This project, led by classmates Popsie Gamboa and Maripi Jalandoni, was our way of giving back to our Sisters.
Additionally, engaging in activities that bring joy can have a calming effect on our overall well-being. The Red Charity Gala (RCG) is one such activity that supports various charity projects. This year, the gala will feature a fashion presentation by Ivarluski Aseron on Oct. 8 at The Peninsula Manila. The support of sponsors like Ben Chan, George Royeca, and Genteel Home is instrumental in making these charity projects possible.
Genteel Home, a premier furniture design studio, has recently opened its newest atelier at the Podium Mall in Mandaluyong City. They celebrated their 10th anniversary and launched five iconic chairs inspired by Filipino icons such as Hidilyn Diaz, Isko Moreno, Vice Ganda, Karen Davila, and Piolo Pascual. Genteel Home’s commitment to sustainability, as evidenced by their investment in a mahogany farm, is commendable.
In conclusion, finding calmness in our lives is not always easy. However, by practicing mindfulness, prioritizing self-care, setting boundaries on media consumption, fostering a supportive network, and engaging in activities that bring joy, we can navigate life’s storms with a sense of peace.
