Unleashing Chile: Experience the Thrilling Battle against Pinochet Dictatorship through Captivating Video Game

“Dirty Wars: September 11” – A New Video Game Commemorates Chile’s Dark Past

Inspired by Chile’s military coup and the fight against Pinochet’s dictatorship, game creator Jorge Olivares introduces his latest creation: a video game that immerses players in the resistance movement against a military dictatorship.

In honor of the upcoming 50th anniversary of Chile’s 1973 coup, Olivares spent six years developing the espionage video game “Dirty Wars: September 11.” The game is set during the 17-year dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet and explicitly references the date when he led the coup against socialist President Salvador Allende. This period of military rule in South America was marked by the deaths, disappearances, torture, and exile of thousands of people. Chile only regained its democracy in 1990, and the wounds of this era still haunt the nation.

Olivares, a Chilean sociologist, reveals that the main characters of this stealth genre game, Maxmiliano and Abigail, draw inspiration from his own parents’ experiences. In the game, this virtual couple makes the brave decision to confront the military regime by joining a resistance group. On September 11, Chile will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the coup, which involved a violent siege of the La Moneda presidential palace in Santiago.

Olivares clarifies that his game, which is available on the popular online gaming platform Steam, is not intended to serve as “Marxist propaganda” or an “allegory” for the Allende government. Instead, he aims to provide players with a vivid context of that time period, highlighting an important milestone in Chile’s history.
