Unleashed Chaos: Dozens of Alligators Roaming Wild in a Pennsylvania Town

  • Residents Concerned for Reptiles’ Survival in Cold Autumn

Pennsylvania, known for its harsh winters and unsuitable climate for reptiles, is facing an unusual situation with alligators.

In less than two months, Kiskiminetas Township police have received reports of three alligator sightings, a rarity in the mid-Atlantic region, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.

“It’s becoming too common,” said Ken Kaminski, a nearby resident interviewed by the Journal.

The presence of alligators this summer is partially attributed to the escape of these creatures from their owners. One of the missing alligators, measuring two feet in length, fled into the Kiskiminetas River during a failed transfer between owners. Pennsylvania does not prohibit owning alligators as pets, unlike many other states.

Amber Phillips, owner of an animal shelter that temporarily housed the first captured alligator in early August, expressed frustration, stating, “I’m so over this gator thing,” as reported by the Journal.

The town council attempted to pass a law making it illegal to own crocodilians, which includes crocodiles and alligators, but the proposal was swiftly rejected due to negative reactions from residents, according to the Journal.

Time is running out to catch the loose alligators as winter approaches rapidly. The reptiles are unlikely to survive as temperatures drop with the arrival of fall.

“We just want them caught, and we’re running out of time,” said Michael Petrouski, a resident interviewed by the Journal.
