United introduces new first-class seats in a much-awaited revamp after nearly a decade

United Airlines has unveiled its latest first-class seat, marking the airline’s first new seat in almost a decade. The new seat, designed for narrow-body domestic flights, features advanced technology such as armrest wireless charging stations and winged headrests. Additionally, there will be an 11-by-19-inch barrier between the seats, which will be arranged in a two-by-two configuration.

In recent months, United’s competitors including Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways have also upgraded their business- or first-class seats to provide customers with more privacy and space. Delta introduced domestic first-class seats with privacy wings at the top, while JetBlue redesigned its Mint class to offer seats with sliding doors.

However, the aviation industry has faced challenges in meeting the demand for new cabins and aircraft due to supply chain delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. United itself has experienced these delays but remains committed to enhancing its offerings.

The new United first-class seat will debut on a Boeing 737 this month and is expected to be installed on 200 narrow-body aircraft, including 737s and Airbus A321neos, by 2026. The airline aims to build its future around this seat for domestic flights.

Mark Muren, United’s managing director of identity, product, and loyalty, expressed that while no single seat can meet all needs, this model from Safran, a French aerospace giant, aligns with the airline’s vision for the domestic space. The seat will include wireless, USB-C, and AC outlet charging options, as well as 13-inch seatback screens, 18-by-8.5-inch tray tables, and new seat cushions.

United also plans to upgrade its current first-class seat, which was introduced in 2015, by incorporating features such as privacy barriers and new cushions. However, not all aircraft will receive the new seat.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that United operates wide-body aircraft domestically between hubs, which offer its premium Polaris seat, capable of converting into a bed for passengers.

Overall, United Airlines is dedicated to enhancing passenger comfort and experience by introducing innovative and technologically advanced first-class seats that prioritize privacy, convenience, and cutting-edge features.
