United Airlines pilots recently ratified a new contract with substantial pay raises, with compensation increasing up to 40.2% over a four-year period. This agreement marks the last of the three largest U.S. airlines to reach a deal with its pilots in the midst of a shortage in the industry.

According to the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), the pilots’ union, this contract is valued at approximately $10 billion. ALPA announced on Friday that the new contract received 82% approval from over 97% of United pilots who participated in the vote.

Delta Air Lines and American Airlines previously secured new contracts earlier this year, also offering significant salary increases. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, negotiations across airlines faced obstacles, but pilot and labor unions in the industry persistently advocated for improved compensation and better working conditions as travel demand rebounded and inflation spiked.

Other unions are also fighting for enhanced pay and benefits, resorting to strikes or threatening strikes when negotiations fail to meet their demands. The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has announced plans to expand strikes at General Motors and Ford Motor, targeting two U.S. assembly plants on Friday, as stated by UAW President Shawn Fain.

This week witnessed the finalization of a deal in the entertainment industry as Hollywood writers and studios resolved a nearly 150-day labor strike.
