Union Proposes Allowing Workers to Leave Early When Temperature Reaches 25 Degree Mark

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a call for employers to ensure their offices are well-ventilated and provide ample space for staff to work away from direct sunlight. HSE representative Mr Shears proposes that employers allow their workers to begin and end work earlier to avoid peak heat times on public transport. Additionally, breaks should be provided to mitigate the risk of heat exhaustion. Last year’s heatwave, which saw temperatures reach 40C – a new record – prompted a 1,000% spike in visits to online hot weather working guidance, says HSE. Bosses are urged to invest in heatwave preparedness measures as climate change makes long, hot summers increasingly common. The GMB Union has called for a legal maximum working temperature to be established.
