Union Negotiations Stall as UPS Workers Move Closer to Strike

The Teamsters Union and UPS are currently engaged in labor negotiations in order to avoid the largest strike in the U.S. since the 1950s. However, both parties are accusing each other of abandoning the negotiations.

According to the union, UPS presented an offer that they deemed unacceptable and failed to address the needs of its members. Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien criticized UPS for choosing the wrong road in these negotiations.

On the other hand, UPS denies ending the negotiations and claims that the union has a responsibility to stay at the table. UPS states that refusing to negotiate, especially when an agreement is within reach, creates unease among employees and customers while also posing a threat to the U.S. economy.

The current labor contract for unionized UPS workers expires at the end of the month. If a deal is not reached, employees have authorized a work stoppage.

The Teamsters union has given UPS a deadline of June 30 to improve their offer. If UPS fails to sweeten the deal significantly, a strike is imminent. This strike could potentially be one of the largest labor strikes in U.S. history, putting millions of daily deliveries at risk.

The union’s main goals are higher pay, more full-time jobs, and the removal of surveillance cameras in delivery trucks. They also want equal wages for all employees regardless of tenure.

UPS argues that their latest contract offer is competitive and historic within the delivery industry. They emphasize their significant growth and contributions to the economy, delivering approximately 6% of the nation’s gross domestic product.

In 1997, UPS experienced a 15-day strike that resulted in losses of $850 million. With the growth of e-commerce and increased demand for expedited delivery, a work stoppage by UPS could frustrate U.S. consumers and disrupt businesses that rely on fast shipping.
