Union boss warns that rail strikes may persist for two decades

The future of industrial action on the nation’s railways is predicted to span over the next two decades, according to a warning from the general secretary of the Aslef train drivers’ union, Mick Whelan. Whelan stated that his members will continue to take action until they are heard. However, during an interview on Sky News, Whelan was informed that the government appeared to be ignoring his union after the rejection of a pay offer, with new strikes being dismissed as “whistling in the wind.” In response, Whelan stated, “Even if we have to persist and fight for five, ten, or even twenty years to be taken seriously, the day will come when our concerns are properly addressed and discussed.” When asked if Aslef members were truly prepared for a 20-year period of industrial action, Whelan replied, “Quite possibly. Because what alternative do we have? Doing nothing?”

Lucy Frazer, the Culture Secretary, expressed disappointment in Whelan’s comments. Meanwhile, rail passengers should anticipate further disruption to their journeys this week as train drivers refuse to work overtime for six consecutive days. Last month, Aslef announced that its members would be withdrawing non-contractual overtime, specifically rest-day working, from today until Saturday, July 8th, affecting 16 out of the country’s 35 rail operators.
