Monday night’s highly anticipated debut for Rodgers took a disturbing turn when he suffered an injury on only his fourth play of the game, jeopardizing his chances of playing for the rest of the season, as reported by USA Today. Rodgers, who joined the Jets after a blockbuster trade from the Green Bay Packers, was sacked and left the game with an apparent torn Achilles. An MRI is scheduled for Monday to confirm the extent of the injury. If it indeed turns out to be a torn Achilles, it’s unlikely that the 39-year-old quarterback will return to the field this season.
Jets coach Robert Saleh expressed concern after the game, acknowledging that the MRI is expected to confirm their fears, and requesting prayers for Rodgers, as mentioned in the AP report. As highlighted by Bill Barnwell of ESPN, players who sustain a torn Achilles on the field often receive confirmation of the injury the following day. The unexpected outcome for Jets fans is that, despite Rodgers’ early departure, the team managed to pull off an upset victory against the Bills, claiming a 22-16 overtime win. Backup quarterback Zach Wilson stepped up and played exceptionally well, keeping the Jets in the game, while safety Jordan Whitehead intercepted the Bills’ quarterback, Josh Allen, three times. Allen also fumbled the ball late in the game. Nevertheless, Barnwell asserts that losing Rodgers will likely have a detrimental impact on the Jets’ chances of making it to the playoffs this year.
