Unforgettable First Adult Vacation: Cherishing Quality Time with Parents on My Favorite Trip

  • In September 2022, my parents and I embarked on a memorable vacation to Savannah, Georgia.
  • This marked our first family trip since my graduation in 2014.
  • During our time in Savannah, we discovered new aspects of each other and cherished the opportunity to create lasting memories.

My family’s fondness for Savannah, Georgia knows no bounds.

Despite residing four hours south in Central Florida, this charming coastal city has always been a cherished sanctuary for us. Back in 2000, my parents—Kevin and Amy Edmonds—visited Savannah to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. They later included me in 2004 when I was just nine years old. At that time, my enthusiasm for being a Girl Scout led us to Savannah, where the organization was founded in 1912 (according to their website).

We used to spend a weekend or two in Savannah every year, but life got in the way and those trips gradually ceased. Although unintentional, the absence of family vacations was palpable.

As I left home to attend college in 2014 and later moved to New York City in 2019, family vacations became a distant memory. It wasn’t until a friend mentioned her family’s upcoming European adventure that I realized how much I longed for those carefree vacations with my parents.

In 2022, I proposed the idea of all of us taking a week off work and recreating the leisurely vacations of the past.

Vacationing as adults: a chance to reconnect in a whole new way

One of the first things we did upon arriving in Savannah was to celebrate with cocktails—a delightful departure from our previous itineraries. We then savored dinner at a local restaurant, where I surprised everyone by ordering a hamburger with Pimento Cheese. It was a shocking choice considering my picky eating habits as a child.

During our adult vacation, it became evident that my age was no longer a hindrance to our activities. With time, my palate and interests had expanded, allowing us to embark on new experiences together.

We also rediscovered old ways of connecting. One evening, while staying in our Airbnb in Savannah’s Historic District, my mom and I decided to stay in and watch one of our favorite movies, “Grease.” The moment the familiar chords of “Hopelessly Devoted to You” played, I realized how much I had missed bonding over the songs with my mom.

Discovering new facets of my parents during our stay

Throughout our trip, my parents and I rented an Airbnb where we spent quality time together and engaged in meaningful conversations. It was eye-opening to learn about my parents’ childhoods, reminiscing on past trips to Savannah, and discovering things about them I never knew before.

For instance, my dad shared an outline of a fictional novel he had started years ago. He brought it along on the trip, giving me a glimpse into his early passions.

A treasure trove of family memories—irreplaceable and priceless

While we enjoyed ample downtime in Savannah, we also took the opportunity to explore the city and indulge in its rich history. We visited various shops and small businesses along the waterfront, where I purchased local art and trinkets. Of course, we couldn’t resist trying some Pralines from River Street Sweets.

We were so immersed in the vacation experience that we didn’t take many photos. However, this allowed us to be fully present with one another. The trip served as a reminder of the importance of spending quality time with my parents, and I hope that family vacations become an enduring tradition for us.
