Unforgettable 2024 Lamborghini Revuelto: A First Drive Review That Leaves a Lasting Impression

Verdict 9.0 / 10 – Campagnano di Roma, Italy

It’s difficult to put into words, but saying “Lamborghini” out loud immediately brings to mind images of powerful V12 supercars. Whether it’s the first time you witnessed a Miura speeding through your town, your enviously wealthy neighbor’s Diablo VT, or admiring an Aventador SVJ at a local car show – these memories are all thanks to Lamborghini, a company that has been creating unforgettable moments for 60 years, and shows no signs of stopping. However, in an era dominated by digital and electric vehicles, good intentions are not enough. That’s why Lamborghini has introduced the 2024 Revuelto, their first plug-in hybrid vehicle. This supercar combines a traditional 6.5-liter V12 engine – reminiscent of the iconic Countach and Murcielago – with a 7.4-kilowatt-hour battery and three electric motors. This hybrid system aims to reduce emissions, enhance performance, and improve drivability, all while maintaining the raw excitement that Lamborghini customers expect from their flagship models. The real question is whether the Revuelto can match the memorable experiences of sitting in your neighbor’s Diablo, gazing up at its scissor doors. To find out, I had the opportunity to test drive the Revuelto at the Autodromo Vallelunga near Rome, Italy, for 50 thrilling minutes.

Quick Stats

  • Engine: 6.5-Liter V12
  • Motors: Dual Radial Flux Front / Single Axial Flux Rear
  • Output: 1,001 Horsepower
  • Transmission: Eight-Speed Dual-Clutch
  • 0-60 MPH: 2.4 Seconds (estimated)
  • On Sale: Early 2024

At first glance, the Lamborghini Revuelto’s powertrain seems incredibly complex. With three electric motors, rear-axle steering, and a redesigned engine layout, it’s hard to imagine how all of these systems work together in practice. The central tunnel, where a driveshaft would typically be found, contains the lithium-ion battery. This battery delivers power to the two axial-flux electric motors, one for each wheel, enabling true torque vectoring. Each motor generates 295 horsepower and 257 pound-feet of torque, resulting in a wheel torque difference of 1,586 lb-ft from side to side. The third electric motor is a conventional radial-flux unit mounted to the secondary shaft of the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Unlike previous Lamborghini flagships, the transmission now sits behind the V12 engine due to the battery’s placement. Integrated into the active rear differential, this compact eight-speed transmission offers improved weight distribution and smoother shifts compared to the outgoing Aventador model. Additionally, the transmission handles reversing duties. The complexity of the powertrain extends into the software as well, with advanced systems managing torque distribution, regenerative braking, and ESC simultaneously. The electric motors play a crucial role in maintaining stability, taking over braking duties during cornering and harnessing the engine’s momentum to recharge the battery, all while seamlessly blending power sources to provide the full 1,001 horsepower of the Revuelto. The car also boasts other advanced features, such as faster-reacting magnetic dampers, rear-axle steering, and larger carbon-ceramic brakes.

My initial surprise at the press meeting was quickly replaced by anticipation as I prepared to drive the Revuelto for the first time. With the words “Don’t screw it up, Brett” echoing in my mind, I pressed the throttle and felt a mix of excitement and nerves. Driving a $600,000 supercar on a race track I had never even seen in a video game was a daunting task. However, as soon as I accelerated, any doubts were replaced by a sense of confidence provided by the Revuelto. The initial lap around Vallelunga was a gentle sighting lap, but on the second lap, my professional lead driver allowed me to push the car harder. As the Revuelto effortlessly accelerated on the front straight, reaching over 100 miles per hour, I could feel the improved downforce compared to its predecessor, the Aventador Ultimae. The car hugged the road tightly, and the steering response and stability at high speeds were exceptional. Braking at the end of the straight was powerful, thanks to the carbon-ceramic brakes, although the pedal felt slightly firm. The Revuelto gracefully navigated corners, providing precise and direct steering feedback. Powering out of corners, I was treated to the distinct roar of the V12 engine, resembling the soundtrack of 1970s Grand Prix races. Throughout the experience, the Revuelto’s electric motors seamlessly blended power sources, giving the car unparalleled connection to the road. Despite its advanced technology and complex systems, the Revuelto did not sacrifice the sheer enjoyment and thrill of driving that Lamborghini is known for. However, the tires on my test car, Bridgestone Potenza Sport, felt slightly slippery under hard braking and acceleration over curbs at the Vallelunga track – but this could be attributed to worn tires rather than a flaw in the car itself.

Overall, my test drive of the 2024 Lamborghini Revuelto left me in awe of its performance, handling, and exhilarating driving experience. From the responsive steering to the powerful V12 engine, the Revuelto maintains Lamborghini’s commitment to delivering unforgettable moments on the road. With its innovative hybrid powertrain and advanced technology, the Revuelto sets the stage for Lamborghini’s future models, showcasing the brand’s ability to combine performance and sustainability without compromising the pure joy of driving.
