Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) revealed a harrowing experience during his visit to Israel on Sunday. While in Tel Aviv, Schumer and his congressional delegation were forced to seek shelter due to rockets launched by Hamas. Schumer highlighted the terrifying situation faced by Israelis and emphasized the need to support Israel in its defense against such attacks. Schumer shared this incident with his followers on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Accompanied by Senators Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), and Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Schumer’s delegation is currently in Israel to meet with government officials and families affected by the ongoing violence between Israel and Hamas. However, sirens in Tel Aviv interrupted their schedule and forced them back into the shelter, resulting in a delay of their press conference.
During the press conference, Schumer expressed solidarity with the Israeli people, stating that their experience that day mirrored what Israelis face on a daily basis. He recounted an incident during their lunch where the sirens went off, prompting them to rush into a shelter until it was safe to come out. This unforeseen event also caused a delay in their press conference.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate, with Hamas launching surprise attacks on October 7, followed by Israel’s counteroffensive. The violence has claimed thousands of lives, the majority of whom were civilians. The State Department confirmed that 27 Americans have also lost their lives in the conflict. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, an estimated 2,329 Palestinians have died and 9,042 have been injured, while Israeli authorities report over 1,300 Israeli casualties, mostly civilians killed in Hamas’s initial surprise attack last weekend, according to The Associated Press (AP).
Senator Schumer’s account of seeking shelter in Israel echoes similar experiences of other lawmakers. Last weekend, Representative Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) and his family had to take shelter during a trip to Israel due to Hamas’s rocket attacks. Additionally, Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) found refuge in a bomb shelter while visiting Jerusalem. To get a glimpse of Schumer’s experience, you can view the photo he shared on Twitter.
