Unexpected Outcome After Grueling Muddy Endurance Race Leaves Participants Feeling ‘Disgusted’

Participants in the Tough Mudder obstacle races around the world typically receive a turkey leg, a cold beer, and a sense of accomplishment. However, at a recent event held in Sonoma County, California, over 100 participants reported bacterial infections after crawling or wading through mud. These infections led to symptoms such as fever, pus-filled rashes, and other issues. The Sonoma County Department of Health Services is investigating whether these infections are related to swimmer’s itch, staph infections, or Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria found in the water. NBC News reports that the event took place at Sonoma Raceway on August 19-20.

One competitor, Noa Umbaugh, woke up the day after the race with sore red bumps covering her legs and stomach. She discovered other participants with similar symptoms online. At least seven participants have tested positive for Aeromonas, and the health department suspects that most of the reported infections are caused by the same bacteria. Treatment for both Aeromonas and staph infections typically involves antibiotics. It is recommended that clinicians obtain cultures from infected patients and report the results to the health department.

Some participants who experienced the infections believe that the mud used in the race should have been tested for bacteria, especially since there were similar illnesses reported after last year’s race at Sonoma Raceway. The Sonoma County health department has issued a health advisory and advises individuals with symptoms such as rash, fever, vomiting, and muscle aches to seek medical attention. Tough Mudder is conducting its own internal investigation in response to the reports. For more information, individuals can contact Sonoma County’s Public Health Division.

Overall, the reported bacterial infections following the Tough Mudder race in Sonoma County have raised concerns and sparked investigations to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.
